The Improvement Foundation has opened recruitment for its 2009/10 leadership programmes for frontline leaders involved in improvement and reform. This year, to build on the success of the last four years, the Improvement Foundation is running two new leadership programmes; one chaired by Dr David Colin-Thome, National Clinical Director for Primary Care, and the other chaired by David Hunter, Professor of Health Policy and Management at Durham University

An article about the Improvement Foundation's approach to tackling health inequalities (the Healthy Communities Collaborative) has recently been published in the Journal of Integrated Care. Putting local people in the driving seat and orientating professionals around them to provide local support is an innovative and practical approach to addressing some causes of health inequalities.

As part of the ‘National Awareness and Early Diagnosis Initiative’ recently launched by the Department of Health, work is already underway in the UK to improve public awareness and fast referral of cancer, with pilot schemes in 20 Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) run by the Improvement Foundation.

The NHS Cancer Screening Programme has commissioned the Improvement Foundation to undertake a project with six Primary Care Trusts to address the decline in uptake of cervical screening in women aged 25-34.
