Mental health

Helping patients with mental health problems is an important part of the work of general practice. National figures show:

  • 16% of adults of working age have a mental illness
  • 30% of those people attending GP surgeries have mental health problems.

There is also significant evidence that mental health patients and their carers prefer their treatment to be offered in primary care.

The Improvement Foundation launched the National Primary Care Mental Health Collaborative in 2006 to improve the care of adults of working age with common mental health disorders, such as anxiety and depression, in primary care. Support is still available to practice care organisations.
